Item Description
A fine and rare aquatint, “…..The Reduced Annuity Office at the Bank of England”, published by in 1790 by Michael Angelo Taylor, son of the architect, Sir Robert Traylor. Drawn & Engraved by Thomas Malton; Designed by Sir Robert Taylor.
Within a good copy of an eighteenth century print frame, o.s: 21 inches x 17.25 inches.
Sir Robert Taylor was born in Essex in 1714; he died in 1788, two years before the publication of this print. His father was a London stonemason who apprenticed his son to the sculptor Sir Henry Cheere and sent him to Rome to study. Whilst there his father died and Robert returned to England penniless and thus began his career as a working sculptor. Having completed commissions for the old Bank of England and the Mansion House, in around 1753 he gave up sculpture for architecture. He became architect to the Bank of England between 1776 and 1781; and again in 1783. It was during this time that he designed the Reduced Annuity Office, the subject of this engraving by Thomas Malton. Sir Robert was knighted whilst sheriff of London, 1782-1783.
After Sir Robert Taylor, the Bank of England’s next architect was Sir John Soane, the influence of the former architect on Soane is plain to see in the design of Taylor’s Reduced Annuity Office.
