Item Description

A fine French snuff box made using translucent blonde tortoiseshell. Two engraved gold cartouches are inlaid to the lid, each engraved with the initials, B & L and surrounded by leaves and flowers further inlaid with tiny beads of abalone. The whole thing from the same genre of French horn and tortoiseshell jewellery made during this period, 1850-60, and of the same high quality.
Made with a ‘hidden hinge’, as invented in Scotland by John Sandy at the end of the eighteenth century and more often encountered to hinge the lid of mauchlineware sycamore boxes.
3 1/4 in x 1 1/2 in x 13/16 in
