In 1664, the East India Company leased the Bombay area from the British Crown. A fort and a customs house were built on the site of a former Portuguese manor house together with a warehouse and quay. During the last decades of the 17th century the harbour traffic increased considerably and in 1694 the Company finally built a dockyard at Bombay.
After that, all English ships were directed to “Enter at the Bombay Harbour for refitting and graving” and as a result of this the revenue for the Company grew considerably and by 1734 it was necessary to add a dry dock for any refitting and graving to be carried out. Outer fortifications were built around the town of Bombay along with several public buildings, including the Church of St. Thomas. In this perspective view, Bombay Castle (on the right) is seen from across the harbour, along with the custom house and its pier, the church and the flagstaff.
