Item Description
The seat of Godyngton, now Goddington, was inherited by Edmund Hodsoll from the Haddons. Edmond died in 1711, the estate inherited by one of his four sons, Edward Hodsoll, as stated on his arms presented here ‘of St. Mary Cray, Kent and of the Strand, Banker…..’. As recorded in the parish register ‘He died possessed of it in 1794, as did his son about one month afterwards, unmarried, on which it came to his sister Matilda Hodsoll, spinster, the present possessor of it’.
These professionally produced arms are for Matilda who has annotated them ‘& Survivor with her Mother & Brother’; to the reverse there is an inscription reading ‘My Dear Brother left my Mother and my Self Executrix’s to his last Will’.
English, painted in gouache on vellum and within a period rosewood frame, circa 1800.
