Item Description

A mid 17th century bronze (copper-alloy) mortar cast four times with the Commonwealth Arms within a wreath of laurel. London made, perhaps from one of several smaller foundries based around Lothbury and Aldersgate.
The Commonwealth Arms make it certain that this foundry was established around 1649 and not later than 1660.

There followed a considerable output of mortars from this foundry accounted for by the necessity to replace those lost in the destruction of some thirteen thousand homes in the Great Fire of 1666.
