The artistic style of Ancient Egypt was enthusiastically adopted, particularly in France and England, following Napoleon's conquest of Egypt and then his defeat at the Battle of the Nile in 1798. Napoleon had taken a scientific expedition with him to Egypt and the publication of the expedition's work, the Description de l'Égypte, was begun in 1809, eventually coming out as a series in 1826, and inspiring everything from sofas with Sphinxes to tea sets painted with the pyramids.
