Item Description
George III forged iron and steel weight driven spit jack; a decorative front plate with scrolls and a stylised pigs head. The flywheel and handle associated. Southern England circa 1770.
Front plate 11.75 inches high.
A logical development of the lantern clock, the spit jack, so named after the kitchen boy that it was instead of, was usually made by a clockmaker. The purpose, by means of weights and gears, was to turn the meat before the fire in order simply to achieve an even roast.
