Item Description
A fine reverse painted mezzotint laid down onto the glass titled 'The Strolling Musicians'. Printed for Carington Bowles after the original work by Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, done circa 1770. Within a good 18th century 'Hogarth' print frame, carved and parcel gilt pearwood faced onto pine. (Wormed.)
Dietrich was born in Weimer in 1712 and died in Dresden 1774. By 1731 he was court painter under Augustus the Strong, the same from 1741 to Augustus III. In 1748 he was made superintendent of the Dresden painting collection and from 1764 to 1766 he was director of the art school attached to the Meissen porcelain manufactory.
