Item Description

John Hamilton Mortimer. Two etchings from the artist’s “Twelve Characters from Shakespeare” published March 15 1776. Cut to oval, some title and verse pasted to the reverse, within what must be the original fine Georgian ebonized frames.
13.5 inches x 16 inches
Mortimer is recorded in an entry of The Met as an admirer of Salvator Rosa, applying aspects of that artist’s dramatic style to equivalent British subjects. The original drawings for the series of twelve were exhibited at the Society of Artists in the year proceeding publication.
Mortimer was born in Eastbourne, East Sussex in 1740 and died, London, 1779.
