Item Description
19th Century plaster bust of John Locke after the lead example by John Cheere in the Bodleian Library.
Height: 17.25 inches x 11.5 inches across the shoulders.
A similar plaster bust with the same socle (a raised panel to the front) is in the collection at West Wycombe Park. It is recorded as being in the company of Milton, Pope, Newton and Socrates.
John Cheere supplied 26 plaster busts to the The Wren Library, Trinity College, Cambridge, sometime around 1760. This example will have been made after this date, perhaps by one of the Italian immigrant plaster casters working in the Leather Lane area from early in the 19th century.
