Item Description
A large, fine and impressive scrimshawed whale’s tooth, graved to the polished surface with a scene of two whalers, one American, the other British; the long pennants suggesting they are on the return leg of their journeys. Curiously, the
house flags of each vessel appear to be the same, (or at least remarkably similar). The rigging, together with all other details; reef points, dead-eyes etc., are accurately rendered indicating the hand of an experienced mariner. The scene is bordered by double scored lines to the sides in the manner of ship’s surgeon and renowned scrimshaw artist, William Lewis Roderick, although this example is highly unlikely to be by his hand. It does, however, appear to be an original image, drawn from experience, as opposed to taken from an existing source.
English or American circa 1830.
8 inches long x 4.25 in at the root end.
