Item Description

Pair of Portraits; Rev. & Mrs. Fisher painted by Frank Samuel Eastman, signed and dated 1916, within period gilt gesso moulding frames. Clearly a talented portrait painter, Eastman, was born in Croydon and studied at the Croydon School of Art; he completed his studies at the Royal Academy Schools and went on to exhibit 35 works at the Royal Academy between 1902 and 1949. The hands of both sitters are beautifully painted and the viewer feels confident of knowing the character of his subjects. Eastman lived and worked at Sydenham in South East London and also spent time in Leamington Spa.

Since entering these portraits on our website we learn that a son of the sitters, Geoffrey Fisher, became Archbishop of Canterbury. He served from 1945 to 1961. One of the main themes of his time in office was church unity. He worked continually to build bridges to other Christian churches, and in 1960 became the first Archbishop of Canterbury to meet a Pope since the English Reformation, more than four centuries earlier. His eldest son, Henry, became president of Wolfson College, Oxford. These portraits used to hang in the dining room at Lambeth Palace.
