Item Description

An important portrait of the racehorse Veles, winner of the Princess of Wales stakes in 1902. This painting, by Henry Frederick Lucas Lucas, is on a considerably larger scale than is usual for this artist and was probably commissioned by the owner to mark the success.
Signed lower right by the artist, H.F. Lucas Lucas and dated 1902; and in script to the reverse 'Veles by Isinglass-Veleda. Painted by H.F. Lucas Lucas Rugby September 1902'.
Within a fine gilt moulding frame period to the work.
 o.s: 42.25 in x 34.5 in
Long lived, from 1848 to 1943, Lucas Lucas painted a number of hunting scenes, especially of the Pytchley. Earl Beatty was one of his patrons and Forres published several of his works as prints.
