Item Description
A chromolithographic print after the painting of 1904 by Albert Holden. Presented with ‘Pears’ Annual’ in December 1905 and now in a period maple veneered frame.
o.s: 25 on X 34.5 in.
The scene is the Painted Hall of the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich, where Admiral Lord Nelson lay in state almost 100 years before, a uniformed naval pensioner is saluting a bust of The Admiral; perhaps a duty he performs daily. In the background is a detail of Thornhill’s wall decoration to be found on the north side of the arch into the Upper Hall, now named after Thornhill's work as the Painted Hall.
This example of an enduringly popular print is a little unusual in that the title band and details are still present.
