Item Description
A ship candlers' boxwood and brass slide gauge for measuring 'Shroud Tard Hemp', 'Laid Manilla', ‘Hawser Tard Hemp', 'Chain', etc., etc. Made by Edward Preston & Sons, Birmingham late in the 19th century. Stamped T.B. LTD, presumably for the Chandlers.

Edward Preston began his business as a plane maker at the end of the 18th century, the business growing throughout the 19th under his son, Edward Preston Jnr. In 1889 the three sons of Edward Preston Jnr. joined the firm which went into something of a decline in the early years of the 20th century before being bought out by the neighboring Birmingham firm of John Rabone & Sons in 1932.
