Item Description

The Guinea Pig, particularly important to the Incas of Peru where the Guinea Pig is indigenous, was bought to Europe by the Spanish conquistadors. Through the burgeoning trade with Europe the Guinea Pig then came to England where they were valued as exotic pets, especially among royalty and the rich. Queen Elizabeth I was amongst the first of the European fans of guinea pigs.
This charming model of two guinea pigs was cast in bronze and decorated by the ladies of Franz Bergmann’s foundry in Vienna. It is marked beneath GESCHÜTZ, (copyrighted), indicative of the foundry’s output at the turn of the 19th century.
