Item Description
A superb early 19th century Mahogany bookcase attributed to Gillows. This beautiful bookcase having an ogee moulded cornice with Lancet Gothic glazed doors, retaining the original glass and Mahogany fronted adjustable shelves, the back panels covered in a burnt orange silk fabric. The base of the bookcase having a centre section with re-entrant panelled moulded doors. These doors open to reveal the original trays which are all Oak lined. Flanked by graduated drawers, also Oak lined with turned knob handles and original escutcheons. The whole raised on a moulded plinth. Wonderful colour with a rich lustre and original finish. Circa 1810.
Stamped by Abraham Solomon, a furniture broker at 59 Great Queen Street, London. Various known pieces of Gillows furniture dating from 1780 - 1840 are stamped "A Solomon, 59 Gt Queen St". He was well known to retail pieces new or second hand.
