Item Description

A rare, early 17th century carved stone leopard, from Knole House, Kent the home of the Sackville West family. The Leopards depicted with a shield, were added to the decoration of the house when it was remodelled circa 1605 - 08, by Thomas Sackville. You can find representations of them on the staircase, gable ends and stained glass windows.

Leopards as with Lions were used in heraldry to symbolise status, rank and power.

In good condition, with old restoration, a copper strap for support to the base, this Leopard was most likely removed in the 19th century when restoration work was done to the house.
