Item Description
A large scale, terracotta figure on pedestal, of the Huntress by John Mathews. In very good condition, with traces of old paint, the base of the figure stamped 'John Mathews Royal Weston Pottery'.
Weston Pottery was born from two terracotta brick and tile manufacturers, owned by Charles Phillips and John Harvey merging in 1847. It was at this point that they began to produce garden ornaments and flowerpots and exhibited their wares at the Great Exhibition of 1851. They gained recognition for their work, counting Kew Gardens and The Royal Parks as prominent customers. Phillips retired in 1871 and was succeeded by John Mathews, who ran the company for eighteen years until his retirement.
