Item Description
An enchanting piece of history, this Noah's Ark, along with Noah, his family, and the animals, is presented on a custom-made display.
This set comprises Mr. and Mrs. Noah, six of their children (8 human figures), and an impressive array of 32 pairs of animals (64 animals in total), making a grand total of 72 figures.
Likely from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, and from Germany, this flat-bottomed ark is characteristic of the design prevalent in that region.
Unfortunately, there is no maker's mark.
The production of these arks was often a cottage industry involving family members, with children as young as seven contributing to the painting.
Reflecting the Victorian era's strict adherence to the Sabbath, these arks were typically reserved for play on Sundays.
Beyond religious observance, the exotic and intriguing animals featured in these sets captivated children's imaginations.
While showing signs of wear, including missing legs, chipping, and overall wear, the ark has been overpainted/varnished as part of its long history of play.
The pieces are held on with removable glue dots for easy removal.
The whole piece measures 58.5 cm x 34.5 cm.
