Item Description

An intriguing artifact from the early days of mining, this early Welsh leather pit pony mask features metal eye protection.

The use of pit ponies in the UK dates back to 1750, with their widespread adoption prompted by concerns over the exploitation of women and children in mines.

By 1913, there were 70,000 registered horses for mining, and the last pony in England retired in 1994, while the last in Wales, "Robbie," retired in 1999.

The mask measures 34 cm x 30 cm.

A historical mend on the front of the mask adds to its character.
