For years, people outside of China mistakenly considered these as medical models; however, they are in fact, fertility dolls—ritual items, and this pair stands out for its exceptional beauty.
The male and female figures, with the female appearing pregnant, are both anatomically correct with jointed limbs.
The styles and headwear vary based on the cultural group, showcasing intricate hand-carving and remnants of original vibrant colours.
These dolls symbolize couples aspiring to become parents; they were consecrated in the temple and taken home.
Upon the birth of a child, the dolls would be returned to the temple.
Standing on a supporting base, these dolls measure 30cm from the base to the top of their heads.
