Item Description
This captivating specimen, a British Pit Pony mask.
The mask measures 47 cm x 28 cm.
A poignant piece of history, this Victorian large pit pony mask is crafted from heavy gauge leather.
The use of pit ponies in the UK dates back to the Durham coalfield in 1750.
The public outcry following a Times report about women and children working in the mines led to the widespread use of ponies in mining.
In 1913, there were 70,000 horses registered for mining use.
The last pony in England retired in 1994, and the last in Wales, named "Robbie," was retired in 1999.
