Item Description
An important early and rare, large English George III Lead Cistern dated 1766 with direct provenance from the Bell Hall Estate, York.
Bell Hall is a grade I listed building, in Naburn, in the rural southern part of the city of York, in England.
The house was built in 1680 for John Hewley. The architect is not known with certainty, but is suggested by Historic England to be John Etty, father of William Etty. Purchased direct from the family, this piece is offered for sale for the first time since it was commissioned in the mid 1760s.
The cistern features simply and splendidly, the family initials and date of creation. We love the modesty and integrity of this grand work of functional art.
See black and white photo showing the front of the house, in 1922.
With a number of old repairs and fissures to the lead as one would expect of a working piece of this great age.
