Item Description
Splendid large walnut coffer or dower chest c.1870. Single piece walnut top with a deep moulded edge. Lists on the original iron strap hinges to reveal useful storage inside and locking closed with the original lock and key (a rare feature). Chest constructed from inch-thick walnut boards with exposed dovetails at the corners and decorative steel bindings. The front of the chest is also decorated with two pierced steel heraldic shields featuring three crosses and a chevron and a large escutcheon to the keyhole. With large original iron carry handles at the sides. Raised on a moulded plinth with unusual carved and shaped detail at the front and sides. Excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
