Item Description
17th.c. oak chest or coffer of unusual proportions c.1650. Essentially a six plank chest, one of the earliest forms of joined furniture, though the lid here does have a separate piece joined along the back edge and the floor is in two pieces. At 60" long this one of the largest such chests we have come across. Study enough to use as a hall seat with useful storage space inside. Primitive construction made from thick oak boards joined with rosehead nails. With a simple moulded detail and chip carved edges to the front. Note the cutaway at the sides to form the feet with the cuts extended to form a simple decorative detail. Original iron hinges, lock plate and latch. Very good colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
