Item Description
Fabulous pair of late 19th.c. Louis XVI style giltwood armchairs c.1880. Fine giltwood frames with crisp carved detail and the original gilded finish. Backrests, arm pads and sprung seats retaining their original and beautifully detailed Aubusson tapestry covers. Featuring images of children playing with a kite and blowing soap bubbles on the backs. The seats feature a scene from the fables of the 17th-century French poet Jean de La Fontaine; The Fox and the Crow, and another of dogs in a kennel. Each of the scenes within a border of swagged cloth and floral garlands and signed in the weave. Raised on tapering turned and fluted legs front and rear. Obvious wear to the gilding in places and a repair to one of the back legs on one chair. The upholstery is a little faded and worn but remains serviceable. Tear to the cloth at the rear backrest on one chair. Both chairs are solid and sturdy with firm springs in the seats.
