Item Description
19th Century Oushak Accent Rug
1.76 x 0.92 metres
The weaving workshops of Western Anatolia, where Oushak carpets such as this piece were originally made, have a rich history, stretching back at least as far as the Early Modern era – as the 14th Century explorer Marco Polo once wrote, ‘here they make the most beautiful silks and carpets in the world, and with the most beautiful colours.’ During the 19th Century, these pieces were highly sought after in the West, inspiring many of the designs of European weavings of the period, and can be found in grand historic homes across the UK and Europe.
This late-19th Century Oushak rug boasts a charming, warm colour palette, all in gracefully aged vegetable dyes, with saffron, salmon, and ivory tones over a light terracotta ground. The design employs scrolling floral and botteh motifs in the spandrels, framing a delicately woven central medallion, all enclosed within a decorative outer border.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its outer borders preserved on all sides - its organic dyes have taken on a characterful patina with age.
A wonderful accent piece, to suit a wide variety of interiors.
