Item Description
Antique Bidjar Carpet
4.93 x 3.36 m
Antique Bidjar carpets from Northwest Persia are famed among Persian tribal village rugs for the high quality of their weaves and striking designs and colours. Bidjar is situated along a corridor between the borders of Persia, Anatolia, and the Caucasus, and this wide variety of cultural influences is well-reflected in the diverse range of styles and patterns represented in its carpets.
This lovely early Bidjar carpet, dating to c. 1890-1910, boasts a grand-scale graphic drawing, over a soft terracotta central field, well complimented by the sky-blue tones in the spandrels, and framed by eight individual, creatively designed borders – a bold, dynamic composition, all worked in gracefully-aged vegetable dyes.
Retained in good condition for everyday use, remarkably so for a carpet of this period, and with a fine age-related patina.
A handsome piece, in an impressive format, which would add character and style to any setting.
