Item Description
Antique Feraghan Long Rug
3.74 x 1.80 m
Early Feraghan carpets were popular during the 19th Century, woven in the same region as the equally sought-after Ziegler Mahal carpets. These pieces are often seen in grand houses in Europe and the UK, known for their quiet formality, soft wool and harmonious colours. Feraghan carpets are especially unique in that they manage to harmonise both tribal and formal elements of rug design, and thus have the versatility to suit a wide variety of interior styles.
This early example – dating to circa 1890 – features an elegant, well-balanced allover design, with a high-grade weave that lends a crisp clarity to its drawing. Its gracefully aged vegetable dyed colours include tones of muted indigo, camel, and off white, set against a warm terracotta field, framed by a wide, decorative border.
Retained in good practical condition for everyday use, although with some age-related wear which, in our opinion, adds a feeling of country house charm to this over 130 year old carpet.
A handsome, elegant carpet, with a restrained composition and muted palette, that would lend itself equally to either a contemporary or classic setting.
