Item Description
Antique Mishan Malayer Rug
1.88 x 1.30 m
Antique Malayer rugs, originating from Northwest Persia, are well known for the unique quality of their designs, combining the bold, graphic forms of tribal and village weavings, with the craftsmanship, precision, and delicate floral motifs one would expect from a fine Persian workshop piece. Mishan Malayer carpets in particular are even more sought-after, recognised as higher category weavings than other classic Malayer pieces of their era.
This early Mishan Malayer rug, dating to c. 1870, is an especially striking example of its type, with a delicate abrash (or, colour variation) across its charcoal grey - a rare colour in weavings of in its type - forming a charming backdrop to its stamped all-over design, framed by a decorative border.
Preserved in good practical condition for everyday use, though with some age-related wear, which, combined with its gracefully weathered vegetable dyes, lends the work a characterful patina.
An attractive accent rug, which would add style and personality to any setting.
