Item Description
Art Deco Chinese Carpet, c. 1930s
3.04 x 2.00 m
Pioneered by Walter Nichols, an American in China whose workshops were active from 1924 into the 1930s, Chinese Art Deco carpets represent a real high point in the history of 20th Century design. These pieces are highly sought after, standing out for their unique combination of traditional Chinese elements, alongside design motifs borrowed from the Art Deco movement, which dominated the decorative arts of America and Europe during the period.
This fine c. 1930s example features a delicate ton-sur-ton effect in the field, with a muted caramel ground flanked by a sky-blue floral motif in the border, with playful coral and denim blue accents. It employs an open, well-balanced design, which lends the work a feeling of space and lightness, well complimented by its restrained colour palette.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its original borders preserved on all sides - its organic-dyed colours have taken on a fine patina with age.
A sophisticated mid-century example, to suit a wide variety of settings.
