Item Description
Circa 1900 Northwest Persian Gallery Rug
5.03 x 2.10 m
‘North West’ refers to a myriad group of villages with weaving styles borrowed from a wide range of influences from the surrounding regions, particularly Turkey and the Caucasus, and often including unique, tribal interpretations of sophisticated workshop weavings from further South.
Being an earlier piece, this fine c. 19o0 example is woven in high-grade hand-spun wool, with wonderful organic dyes – the delicate all-over design is repeated in a wide range of tones across a soft indigo field, well framed by a rare cornflower blue border; a well-balanced colour scheme, well suited to this carpet’s open, restrained composition.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use – its organic dyes have taken on a characterful patina with age.
A sophisticated tribal example, to add personality and charm to a wide variety of settings.
