Oushak carpets, originally woven in Anatolia, have a rich history, being among the earliest Oriental carpets to make their way into the Western market in the Early Modern period. This tradition carried on into the 19th Century, when these pieces began to be woven in Iran, and became immensely popular abroad, inspiring the designs of many of the high-value European weavings of the era.
This contemporary example, handwoven in lustrous wool, features a wonderful muted sky-blue field, with geometric patterns in ivory tones, with red accents and sage green in the border. The artist has opted for an open composition, which lends the piece a balanced, spacious feel.
A charming piece, uncommon is this square format, to compliment a variety of settings.
