Item Description

Early 20th Century Anatolian Carpet

4.05 x 3.10 m

The region of Anatolia, in Western Turkey, has a rich history as a centre of high-quality rug weaving, going at least as back as the 13th Century; its carpets were among the first Oriental textiles to be exported to Europe and can be spotted in the paintings of many of the Old Masters, including those of Vermeer, Holbien, and Reubens.

This beautiful 1930s example has a restrained, monochrome palette, with the natural undyed wool making up the ivory field, overlayed in an array of muted, earthy caramel and chocolate brown tones in the drawing. The design employs a simple, repeated overall floral motif – as opposed to a central medallion – framed by a border of impressive prroportion.

Retained in very good to excellent condition, this early 20th Century piece combines a modern, relaxed elegance with the craftsmanship and heritage of a centuries-old weaving tradition, and has the versatility to compliment a wide variety of interiors.
