Item Description
Renowned for their striking, geometric designs, fine durable construction and rich vegetable-dyed colours, Heriz carpets stand out as a class of their own. Woven in Northwest Persia, these pieces incorporate many of the motifs common to tribal and nomadic rugs, lending them a sense of playful creativity, combined with high-quality weaving skills.
This 1920s example features a terracotta ground, with tones of ivory in the spandrels and demin blues in the border and throughout the drawing; a vivid palette, which serves to compliement the bold geometric forms in its design. The composition employs a central medallion in the field, framed by a three-part border of good proportions.
The antique Heriz carpet is in very good practical condition for everyday use, retaining its outer borders and short fringes on both sides; a handsome carpet, with a wonderful naivety which would add character to any setting.
