Item Description
Early Serapi Runner, c. 1870
4.70 x 0.87 m
19th Century Serapi works represent some of the rarest and most sought-after Persian carpets, best known for the originality of their designs - woven in Persia's mountainous North-West, these pieces incorporate many of the bold, geometric motifs commonly seen in Caucasian rugs, rather than the floral patterns common to more Classical Persian carpets, though with the same high-quality weaves, clarity of drawing, and rich vegetable dyes.
This early Serapi runner, dating to around 1870, is a wonderful example of its type. It features a terracotta field, with a delicate abrash - or colour variation - which lends the piece a real sense of depth and character. The design features a geometric medallion pattern, creatively repeated in a range of forms and colours from one to the next, from ones of sky blue, to caramel, to burnt aubergine, across the length of the carpet; a particularly bold drawing, especially relative to its narrow format. The border, intricately woven, features a similar motif.
A stunning carpet, with the charm of the finest tribal pieces, in very good to excellent condition, which would make a welcome addition to any interior.
