Item Description
Fine c. 1880 Kashan Carpet, by Masterweaver 'Mohtashem'
3.20 x 2.08 m
The city of Kashan, among the best-known and highly-ranked Persian rug-weaving centers, first rose to prominence in the 16th Century, under the Safavid Dynasty. These workshops earned a reputation for producing many of the most highly sought-after rugs of the Classical period and continued their work into the early 20th Century.
This stunning late 19th Century example comes from the workshop of the masterweaver 'Mohtashem', and features a soft, sage green field, overlaid with ivory and terracotta tones in the centre, and framed by a denim blue border of good proportions. The colours in its design feature a lovely abrash - or subtle variation in shade - which lends the work a real sense of character and depth, well complimented by the elegance of its design. As an early piece, woven by the elder Mohtashem, rather than his son who carried on his name, this carpet has a naivety and simplicity, uncommon in later examples from the region, as well as a remarkably tight weave and high-quality wool.
A true work of art, in very good practical condition, especially considering its age, which would make a fine addition to any setting.
