Item Description
Fine c. 1880 Tabriz Carpet
3.67 x 2.90 m
The city of Tabriz in Northwest Persia has been known as a major centre of fine rug weaving since at least the 14th Century. Antique Tabriz carpets are distinguished by their tight weaves and remarkable adherence to the traditions of Classical Persian rug weaving design.
This early Tabriz carpet, dating to the 19th Century, employs a rare pomegranate blossom design, usually found in, or else deriving from, 18th Century Caucasian pieces, symbolizing prosperity, fertility, and longevity. The subtle grey color field provides a wonderfully complementary backdrop to the colour palette in the drawing, including shades of sky blue, ivory, tan, and muted gold, all in gracefully aged vegetable dyes, and framed by a border of great proportions. The composition employs a simple, overall design, giving the work a real sense of space and balance.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, still preserving its outer borders and fringes on all sides.
A handsome carpet, with a discreet elegance to blend in a classic or contemporary setting.
