Item Description
Fine Early Karabagh Gallery Rug, c. 1850
4.33 x 1.77 m
Antique Karabagh rugs are much sought after by collectors and designers as they boast some of the oldest and most varied designs of all Caucasian weavings, and represent perhaps the finest in quality and artistry amongst pieces from this region.
This fine 19th-century example has a rare ivory field, providing a complimentary backdrop for the variety of gracefully-aged vegetable-dyed colours in its drawing, ranging from shades of denim blue to burnt ochre and sage green. The design employed a repeated pomegranate blossom motif, drawn from earlier weavings of the 18th Century, symbolizing prosperity, longevity and fertility.
A one-of-a-kind piece, combining a tribal charm and naivety with remarkable craftsmanship, with the versatility to suit either a classic or contemporary interior.
