Item Description
Early Hadji Jalili Tabriz Rug, c. 1890
1.65 x 1.18 m
Antique Tabriz carpets are distinguished by their fine weaves and remarkable adherence to the traditions of Classical Persian rug design. This elegant c. 1890s example is associated with the Master weaver, Hadji Jalili, well known as the artist behind some of the most exquisite and highly sought-after pieces of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many of which can be spotted in grand historic homes across the UK and Europe.
The rug features a stylish, understated palette, with an earth-tone ground and soft ochre tones of olive green, ivory and tan in the drawing, which, thanks to the skill of its artist, has a wonderfully crisp clarity. The layout employs a diamond form in the central field, flanked by the spandrels, and framed by a wide decorative border – a bold composition, relative to this piece’s small format. Another attractive feature is the uniformity of colour across the field and the border, rather than the traditional contrast, which lends the rug a sense of spaciousness and sophistication.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its outer borders and fringes on all sides still preserved.
A charming example, in a rare square format and with a well-balanced design, which would make a welcome addition to any setting.
