Item Description
Large c. 1890 Agra Carpet
4.85 x 3.62 m
The city of Agra in Northern India – best known as the home of the Taj Mahal – boasts a long tradition of master rug weaving. Its carpets, renowned for their exemplary quality and artistry, drawing on the Mughal period designs of the 16th Century, can be found in historic homes across the UK and Europe.
This stunning 19th Century example – a rare find, especially given its age and size – features a subtle grey-black field, overlaid with a simple two-tone design in ivory and plum colours, framed by a wide border. The drawing has a wonderfully crisp quality, thanks to the skill of its makers, and a restrained palette that lends the work a quiet formality.
A beautiful piece, in very good to excellent condition, to compliment a stylish interior.
