Item Description
Large Early Laver Kirman Carpet
5.35 x 3.50 m
Kirman carpets are heir one of the oldest continuous traditions of Persian rug weaving. Their designs and weaving techniques are remarkably faithful to the great achievements of 16th & 17th century Safavid design. During the 19th century these pieces began to make their way into the Western market, recognized as exceptional rugs, especially those from the Laver group which have very fine weaves, delicate drawings and an incomparable range of colours. Early Laver Kirman pieces are often found in historic homes in the UK and Europe.
This exquisite Laver Kirman carpet, dating c. 1860, has a creative and spacious overall drawing, rather than the traditional central medallion motif. The unusual open design contains Cypress tree motifs, which signifies longevity and fertility. The rare ivory field compliments the wide array of charming vegetable-dyed colours, including faded pink, duck egg blue and sage green, which have taken on a beautiful patina with age.
Despite being over 150 years old, this remarkable example is in well-preserved condition for everyday use, with a minimum age related weathering, and still retaining its borders on all sides.
A sophisticated, one-of-a-kind carpet with an effortless elegance which would lend itself to a wide variety of interiors.
