Item Description
Minimalist Azerbaijani Runner, c. 1940
3.48 x 1.10 m
Azerbaijan has a rich history of rug weaving, stretching back several centuries. The country stands at the crossroads of various cultures, and its carpets reflect this in their creativity and diversity. As such, these pieces are highly sought-after, well-known for their wide range of designs and creative use of vegetable-dyed colours.
This attractive example dates to the mid-20th Century, and features an unusually minimalist composition in comparison to other examples of its type. The rich blue colour field has a wonderful abrash, or colour variation, which adds a great sense of depth and character to the stripped-back, reserved drawing, framed by three individual borders.
This Azerbaijani runner is in very good practical condition for everyday use; a charming piece, with a rare composition that would lend a spacious effect to any room, and would compliment a wide variety of spaces.
