Item Description
Ningxia Rug, c. 1900s
2.40 x 1.40 m
The Ningxia region, located near the Mongolian border, boasts one of the most ancient and venerable weaving traditions in all of China, well-known for creating some of the nations most desirable rugs and carpets since at least the 18th Century - these pieces are recognisable for their understated palettes, quiet formality, and high quality weaves.
This c. 1900 example features a 'cloudband' pattern in the central field, worked in tones of cornflower blue over a soft champagne colour ground, and well framed by a wide, simple border. An elegant, restrained composition, complimented by the muted terracotta accents in the drawing.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its borders well preserved on all sides. Its dyes have taken on a subtle patina with age, lending the rug a sense of understated grace.
A charming rug, to suit a stylish interior.
