Item Description
Pure Silk Qum Rug, c. 1940
2.10 x 1.34 m
A stunning 1940s silk carpet, finely woven in the workshops of Qum; this piece features a rare banded pattern, with floral motifs in rich caramel tones, over alternating rows of ivory, red ochre and indigo colours in the field. A bold and creative composition, deviating from the traditional, more crowded central medallion motif, especially relative to this rug's smaller format, all framed by a border of good proportion.
Unlike many of the other Persian rug-weaving cities, Qum only established itself as a center of production in the early 20th Century, though its carpets - its silk carpets in particular - quickly established a reputation for the tightness of their weaves and the elegance and precision of their designs; this piece is certainly no exception: a fine and unique example, retained in very good condition for everyday use, the richness of the dye, the grade of the weaving, and the skill of its makers are all visible in every detail.
