This attractive rug belongs to a group of carpets specifically commissioned in west Persia during the Late 19th century to complement European furnishing tastes. They are unique due to their grand scale drawings, quiet formality and use of soft understated colours and are often seen in grand stately homes in Europe and the UK. An interesting c.1880 Ziegler Sultanabad carpet with a grand scale drawing. The rare grey colour field provides a great contrast to the striking design, framed by a unique border of great proportion.
This early Ziegler Sultanabad carpet is in very good condition for everyday use with a minimal age-related patina and still retains its plain borders on all sides.
