Item Description

Unusual c. 1930s Qum Carpet

2.05 x 1.40 m

Unlike many other Persian rug-weaving cities, Qum only became a center of production in the early 20th century. However, its carpets quickly gained a reputation for their uniquely creative designs and the high quality of the wool, often Merino, used in their making.

This exquisite Qum carpet showcases the superb craftsmanship of a workshop piece combined with the creative, tribal designs reminiscent of rare, 19th century nomadic Qashqai rugs. The composition features a series of delicate floral motifs inspired by English Arts and Crafts weavings, repeated in a variety of soft vegetable dyed colours in alternating ivory and red ochre bands across the field. The design employs a wide color palette, including shades of cornflower blue, soft tan accents and greens – one especially attractive feature is the uniformity of the colour of the border and the central field, lending the work a feeling of space and balance.

The carpet is well-preserved and suitable for everyday use, with its borders intact on all sides.

A highly decorative piece, which would lend itself well to a wide range of interior styles.
