Item Description
An Interesting Late 16th/Very Early 17th Century Italian Chinoiserie Armchair.
This chair was made around 1690 in Italy. The chair is of throne-type form with square legs with moulded and shaped stretchers. There are several unusual features ie the crown finials to the head rail, possibly suggesting a royal or aristocratic connection, the wide arm rests, and the scrolling carved brackets underneath them with their original gilding. They give the piece a certain additional presence and are extremely interesting. The japanned chinoiserie paintwork was applied at a later date in the 18th century. In this period the Italian aristocracy had a particular interest in japanned pieces. The paintwork has aged beautifully and adds considerable character to what is already an intriguing chair.
We have upholstered the chair to an under-finish, ready for the client's choice of outer fabric. An unusual and attractive piece of furniture.
