Item Description
A Rare 17th Century English Walnut and Marquetry Chest of Drawers in Excellent Original Condition.
Made at the end of the 17th century during the William and Mary period in England. Inspired by the sophisticated techniques introduced to England for the first time by the master Dutch cabinetmakers who were attracted to the court, English makers began to use walnut veneers and marquetry, creating wonderful pieces such as this one.
Retaining a fine original patination and stands on four, typical flattened bun feet. Having an overhanging moulded edge to the top and a configuration of two small and three larger graduated drawers. It features fine quality marquetry of stylised scrollwork, the scrolls being constructed from a variety of timbers of different shades and colours which give the inlay a three dimensional effect. The top has one large central oval marquetry panel with smaller pieces at the corners.
It retains a fantastic patination and a deep glow with plenty of variation in colour. This is an outstanding piece of walnut furniture.
